The 62nd FFI-V 2026 State Championshipsat Mordialloc Sailing Club (MSC) was successfully run in light to medium onshore winds with all 6 planned races completed.
Racing on the Saturday began with light winds 6 to 8 knots and the Rainey brothers (Craig and Ian) jumping out of the blocks to record 2 convincing heat wins. In second place for these was “Ten Pound Note” (Trevor Williams with crew John Radnell) and “Highland Ffling” (Phil Parish with crew Sam Kovacic from Sth Australia) showing early form as likely minor placing contenders. By the third race the wind had gradually increased to 12 knots and “Epiphany” (Lewis Davies and crew Cameron Taylor) found another gear with Lewis eventually finding his ff groove (after months of Finn sailing).
On the Sunday it was light winds again (5 to 8 knots?) but steady with the fleet bunching up for some close racing. The Rainey’s caught in second row at a couple of starts worked their way through into second but Lewis and Cam already had the lead and were not going to give it up, winning all 3 of Sunday’s races to take out the Open States trophy 2 points ahead of the Rainey’s in “Where The Bloody Hell Are You” (WTBHAY).
“Ten Pound Note” held onto 3rd overall with consistent placings of 3, 3, & 4 on the Sunday, despite a late run by Phil Parish (visiting from Christies SC, SA) to take 2nd in the last heat. However being in 4th allowed them to take home the Open Handicap award which following the gifting by Mordialloc Sailing Club of one of its older trophies will now be the Perpetual Trophy for the VIC States Open Handicap award.
Shane Davies and James Armstrong in “Fidelity” 3238 retained their Silver trophy unopposed but enjoyed close racing in the Open field to tie on points with “Fizz” seeing close racing throughout the entire fleet.
